Collins’ Teachers are Gearing Up!!!!

With the Beach Party around the corner, Collins’ Teachers are gearing up for this exciting celebration!!!!

Art Appreciation Projects 2011-2012

Students in gifted resource services at Michael Collins were given the task of becoming a mini expert about an artist of their choice. Working either independently or with a partner, students were asked to identify the time period this artist lived as well as how that time period influenced his/her work. Additional research expected the students to identify the people or events in the artist’s life that either enhanced or hindered his/her work.  Finally, each student was to create an interpretation/recreation of at least one piece of his/her artist’s work. As part of the assessment, students were asked to create  ‘top ten’ statements about the art and/or a kinesthetic task for presentation at the Art Expo. Fifth and sixth graders created an ekphrasis poem or sonnet about one of their artist’s master pieces.  Two culminating activities for this unit included a field trip to the Chicago Art Institute and an Art Expo to share work with classmates and parents.

5/6 Field Trip to Misericordia

On April 9^th and April 16^th, the 5/6 Team will be taking a field trip to visit their friends at Misericordia, a home for nearly 500 residents who have severe to profound mental disabilities.  During this visit, students will learn what a typical day for one or many of their friends looks like.  Whether it be school, work, home, play or recreation, students will soon come to realize that the residents of Misericordia are just like us!

Throughout the school year, this team has participated in numerous service learning projects, learning what it means to give “the gift of yourself” to someone else.  It is the hope of all 5/6 teachers that students will continue to participate in service-learning projects throughout their lives, focusing on helping others who truly benefit and appreciate the good deeds and services provided by them. 

Students are proud of the work they’ve done and grateful for the acquaintances they’ve made.  “We feel very lucky to call everyone at Misericordia, our friends!”
